The Freedom to Vote Act

The bill would protect our elections from voter suppression, partisan sabotage, gerrymandering, and dark money.

“Under Section 5, any change with respect to voting in a covered jurisdiction -- or any political subunit within it -- cannot legally be enforced unless and until the jurisdiction first obtains the requisite determination by the United States District Court for the District of Columbia or makes a submission to the Attorney General.

This requires proof that the proposed voting change does not deny or abridge the right to vote on account of race, color, or membership in a language minority group. If the jurisdiction is unable to prove the absence of such discrimination, the District Court denies the requested judgment, or in the case of administrative submissions, the Attorney General objects to the change, and it remains legally unenforceable.”

A History of Voter Suppression
Sep 23, 2020

VOTER SUPPRESSION IS AN UNFORTUNATE BUT CONSISTENT FEATURE OF THE U.S. POLITICAL SYSTEM. LIMITATIONS ON THE RIGHT TO VOTE WERE CODIFIED IN THE JUNE 2013 CASE OF SHELBY COUNTY V. HOLDER, IN WHICH THE U.S. SUPREME COURT GUTTED THE 1965 VOTING RIGHTS ACT. THIS DECISION NO LONGER REQUIRED STATES AND LOCALITIES WITH A HISTORY OF SUPPRESSING VOTING RIGHTS TO SUBMIT CHANGES IN THEIR ELECTION LAWS TO THE U.S. JUSTICE DEPARTMENT FOR REVIEW. SINCE THIS RULING, 25 STATES CREATED NEW OBSTACLES TO VOTE.

Voter suppression has haunted America since it was founded

Ever since the Constitution was written, some of the nation's leaders have sought to deny the vote to those who might wrest their power away.

The racist history of voter suppression laws
on September 16, 2021 in Civic Engagement

According to the Brennan Center, half of the states with the highest Latino population growth passed voter suppression laws in 2016. Five years later, Texas has become the latest state to sign into law extensive restrictions that limit how and when voters can cast their ballot.

The House has passed two bills to ensure free and fair elections. The Freedom to Vote Act (S. 2747) would create national standards for access to the ballot box, make Election Day a holiday, and ensure that every state offers same-day voter registration at all polling locations by 2024 (and at a limited number by 2022).

The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (H.R. 4) would reverse dangerous, undemocratic trends flowing from recent Supreme Court rulings.

2021 was awful for voter suppression, but 2022 may not be better
Nineteen states approved new restrictions on voting in 2021. Unless Senate Democrats intervene, things are likely to get worse in 2022.

Mitch McConnell Comments Comparing 'African Americans' and 'Americans' Spark Outrage

BY KHALEDA RAHMAN ON 1/20/22 AT 6:31 AM EST

"Well, the concern is misplaced," McConnell replied. "Because if you look at the statistics, African American voters are voting in just as high a percentage as Americans."

He continued: "A recent survey, 94 percent of Americans thought it was easy to vote. This is not a problem. Turnout is up, biggest turnout since 1900… they're being sold a bill of goods to support a Democratic effort to federalize elections… this has been a Democratic Party goal for decades."

Let’s see RACISM (TYRANNY) IN AMERICAN FACTS & HISTORY :

Slavery
Sharecropping
Jim Crow Laws
The Civil Rights Act
Redline Districts
Blockbusting
Rockefeller Drug Laws

All based in and on racism and bigotry by white americans who viewed African Americans/Black People as less than human and why the 15th Amendment was put into the U.S. Constitution :

“The 15th Amendment, granting African-American men the right to vote, was adopted into the U.S. Constitution in 1870. Despite the amendment, by the late 1870s discriminatory practices were used to prevent African Americans from exercising their right to vote, especially in the South. It wasn’t until the Voting Rights Act of 1965 that legal barriers were outlawed at the state and local levels if they denied blacks their right to vote under the 15th Amendment.”
