The passenger pigeon was hunted into extinction. I raised pigeons for a few years as a teenager. Used to climb under a bridge and pick the colorful babies. I also still have a jar of saltpeter from the 60's from my chemical experiments.

A true story. My parents weren't home and it was cold out. So, my baby sister coaxed all 15 of them into the house to warm up. My parents weren't too happy when they came home to 15 pigeons in the living room.

PO1 William "Chip" Nagel Back when I was twelve years old and living in the city, I used pigeons as practice specimens for taxidermy!
