Everyone knows that Navy has a big Nuclear Power program, and in fact the Army used to have a Nuclear program, before it was shut down in the 1980s (after the Three Mile Island incident & the China Syndrome movie debuted) Now an Army Times video showcases a topic that I've discussed in the past- the Army is moving forward with planning for the development of potentially mobile or semi-mobile nuclear reactors to power remote stations & other far flung outposts. I know when my unit did the Multi-national Force & Observers (MFO) mission in 2009-2010 all of our remote sites were not on hard-wired power and had to use diesel generators to power all the lights and equipment. It would have been nice to have a nice small quiet, Thorium Molten Salt Reactor (MSR) to provide all of our power needs. This is something that will be important going forward, particularly when the price of fossil fuels is going through the roof..! What does everyone else on RP think about this topic?

I concur. Regardless of how one feels about nuclear power, the fact is that fossil fuels WILL eventually grow exponentially more expensive and expeditionary forces will always need more power as the force continually adopts technology which requires more power to operate. Nuclear is relatively cheap, well understood and generally safe. My concern is that the Army will drag its feet on addressing power needs because power plants aren’t bullets or bombs.
