Why are there so few female musicians in jazz?

This is interesting, Had not actually thought about numbers but since this is true in most of our society it is not surprising that it is also true in Jazz music, I think about artists such as Diana Kraal, Alice Coltrane, Keiko Matsui, Eartha Kitt, Eliane Elias, Melissa Aldana and so on
