The same concept is employed in multi rotor helicopters with some amusing results in the early days. To conserve space on ships, the blades would fold parallel to the fuselage. While manual rotation of the blades worked fairly well, once the motorized the process, you often had one or more blades that ended up remain extended or folded, not only rendering the bird unflyable until corrected, but giving it a somewhat comical appearance.
