After the mass shooting of 19 students and two teachers in Uvalde, Texas, there is renewed attention in Ohio to making sure schools are as fortified as possible.
Most school districts looking to enhance their safety features have to retrofit existing, often outdated buildings, but at one Northeast Ohio middle school built a few years ago, top-of-the-line safety features were built in right from the start.
Ideastream Public Media has chosen not to name the school or the superintendent at his request; he worries that identifying his school may make them a target.
At this particular middle school, you have to enter through a vestibule. Once you’re between two sets of shatterproof glass doors, you have to log in at a machine that runs an automatic background check. If you pass that, someone will buzz you in.
From there, you can enter the school. Little black security cameras follow your nearly every move — a security feed that’s available in real time not only to the administration but also to the local police.

This has been done in Texas for a while. To go eat lunch with my daughter I would have to place my ID on a scanner and it would print out a name badge with that data on it. If you were in the school and it came off or you took it off you were escorted back to the office or asked to leave. All teachers were trained to look for it. This is not a bad thing. I think it is good for two reasons. One entrance in and one exit out during school hours cuts down on sneaking out of school and it provides for security for entry into the school. Two door buzz is even better. If they know you are there with bad intentions they can let you in the first door and lock it behind you and not open the second door creating an entrapment area.

OK sure no more school shootings but how does a harden school circumvent a car bomb in the parking lot.
Point being we really need to understand where the rage in these sort of mass shootings is manifested as the way in which this rage is expressed will just evolve.

I believe that a majority of these school shootings could have been avoided with locked down schools and proper response training by police and school officials/teachers. I say that because my wife is a teacher and last year there was a viable threat to one of the teachers. When the threat was received, the school implemented procedures as trained ensuring all doors were locked, securing classrooms and cops responded and intercepted the perpetrator two blocks from the school. Had he gotten through that he could not have gotten into the school. Now would that have stopped a car bomb...nope. But you have to train to the most likely threat and in the US through the numbers that threat has been someone coming in with a knife, gun, bat, or a bottle full of acid to throw on someone. Locking the school down after the kids arrive I personally believe will thwart and shut a significant amount of that down. Statistics show that gun attacks are the prevailing cause. Car bombs etc are the rarety and well, you just can't do anything about those IMHO but you can keep a weapon yielding individual at bay. See attached report.

Lt Col Scott Shuttleworth - yes I mention bombs as with the Columbine attack - the one I feel where I feel the coverage is responsible for making school shootings a thing - the individuals had intended for the attack to primarily be a bombing, and a shooting secondary. When several of their homemade bombs that they had "planted" in the school failed to detonate they resorted to shooting up the school. Not sure on the design of their bombs but seems like it might be possible to walk in materials in a hardened school and assemble them on site once past the security.
I fully understand that this is not the currently primary threat to schools but I feel it would be the next evolution in school attacks as it has already been attempted. That's why I feel understanding the rage is paramount as bombs would makes these attacks way more kinetic.
Thankfully the bombs in the Columbine attack were duds as I feel that would have set the bar in school attacks.

SPC David S. - The bombs in Columbine were tied to Propane tanks...if someone walks in to a school with one entry a propane tank would probably give it away. Handheld IED's yes maybe but that would only take out a few...IMHO.

PO1 Jeff Chandler - my point exactly in why I said the rage needs to be understood as "gun" can be replace with just about anything as the individual can use a gun, bomb, rock, hands and so on. Hardening a school will just merely displace the violence - not end it. Banning guns will result in an evolution not an end to the violence which could in turn make the problem much worse.
I used bombs as that approach is already out in the wild and used - Oklahoma City and Boston Marathon bombings come to mind.
We need to understand "why" this happening and not "how" this is happening as currently the why is being confused with the how. I get it as in using "guns" for the why it helps to create the narrative of banning guns is a noble idea. What it really means is financially hurting political opposition that support the 2nd.
Really trying to understand the why would lead to real work and politicians don't have that kind of time as 2/3rds or their time is dedicated to getting reelected.
