Those who are "out of sight" tend also to be out of mind when it comes to promotions SFC (Join to see)

That is one of employee's problems. It's a duel edged sword, it cuts both for and against employees and employers at times.

I absolutely love working from home! The last 2+ years has been 100% remote, the previous 20 years allowed me periods of remote work. As someone who writes code, my effectiveness went up by being remote.

Now we live a minimum of an hour and a half from any major metro-plex where the tech jobs are. Couple that with the cost of gas, thank you Brandon, and going in to an office is pretty much NOT an option anymore. Besides, it is only a few years until I "retire" anyways...

I am in daily contact with my co-workers, we turn video on only about 10% of the time. Meetings about application design/coding tend to be more about diagrams so screen sharing is used a lot. And that means I can share my coding screen with someone, go over details, and not interrupt the flow of other sitting around me (as I would in most typical offices full of coders).

I believe you are the proverbial exception to the rule. This rule also takes into account one’s personal work ethic. Some have it, some don’t. You have it.

When I worked remotely my section was responsible to review and approve E&S Control Permits and Waterway Obstruction Permits (among other things). We would have an engineering (technical review) and a biological review. When my staff was done with reviews we would have a QA Review with me, so that consisted of both reviewers, the project developer, and myself. It was a challenge reviewing these plans, they could range in size up to 36” by 48” at a 1”=200’ scale, usually there are multiple sheets. Getting everyone to zoom in and out to understand what was being looked at and why, was a challenge. Often what should have been a 1 hour review in person would wind up being a half a day or better depending on the project size.

SFC (Join to see) - Sounds like ya'll needed a BIG screen at home! I have a 3 screen setup, the center screen being an ultrawide. Very hard to go back to a single (regular) screen...

SSgt (Join to see) - You have a nice set up. When this pandemic stuff hit, I was just trying to get my people permission to get their computers home, and then trained to work remotely for data transfer and stuff like that. Files we typically work with are very large. A lot of what my people do are field visits to evaluate areas for resources and we were locked down for the better part of a year. We had a hell of a time with licenses for different programs and stuff like that. You probably know more about it than I. It all worked out. :)

I personally agree with your wife. mental healt wise it's better to be in the office in my opinion. There are exceptions but they are rare. Mostly people like working from home because they can look after the kids or do other stuff while they work. I have seen quantity and quality of work go down from working at home. That's just how it is.
