When I was at Fort Gordon in 1982 for SOBC and again in 1986 for SOAC and finally in 1992 when our unit was moved from Germany as part of peace dividend we had soldiers injured in lightening strikes and 2 killed in 82 and 1 killed in 86. Thankful no casualties in 92. But injuries. They have changed the way to protect soldiers from laying in open fields during threat with no gear on, to seeking shelter. Laying in open field failed when to much rain happened in short timeframes leaving standing water in the field which caused 2 deaths and 22 injures in 82. The change was to be in wooded area instead of open field. Not so good in 86. Fort Gordon, is barely in the margin for just a single 6 foot grounding rod. When it should be either a buried plate or 3 six foot grounding rods spread out and hooked in series. Not even sure they are teaching proper grounding at the schools there. Thank you for the firsthand history of service and casualties from service. Sever weather can be more deadly than an armed foe. God Bless all our soldiers who dies and were hurt in the line of Duty.

SFC (Join to see) I lost one soldier while in command of HHB, 4-3 FA, in Germany. Freak accident FIST SSG took over driving in deep snow. Slide right track off road new sailings growing slipped under left side of and ended up turning track upside. His head got caught in hatch. Never wish that on anyone.
