Overland Park veteran hopes PACT Act helps family get justice

The PACT Act, which was just approved by the U.S. Senate, is on its way to helping veterans exposed to toxins during their service. It will also help vets made sick by contaminated water at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. KMBC 9 spoke with a local veteran about how she hopes the legislation will help her family get justice.
The PACT Act includes legislation that would open a two-year window for veterans who served at Camp Lejeune to file a lawsuit. Retired Marine Crystal Kelley, who lives in Overland Park, says she believes the exposure severely impacted her daughter's life.

Kelley was pregnant with Caresa when she served at Camp Lejeune in the early 1980s, but it was decades before she learned about the toxins she and her unborn baby were exposed to. Since then, she's been fighting for benefits to help pay for Caresa's costly medical care.
Caresa has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals, sometimes costing tens of thousands of dollars a month. Kelley has held fundraisers and gone to extreme means to pay.
“Deplete savings, get loans, take out retirement, investment money to get her the treatments that she needed,” she said."...
