The Iranian military, with the support and financial assistance of the United States government, overthrows the government of Premier Mohammad Mosaddeq and reinstates the Shah of Iran. Iran remained a solid Cold War ally of the United States until a revolution ended the Shah’s rule in 1979.

It always seems weird to me to read pieces of history we lived through at least part way through.

I didn't know how the Shah had come into power, seems it was not his to keep since he was later overthrown.

You used to be able to find the CIA Report on the Coup. While it has been portrayed at the model of CIA operations in the future, it was in reality a comedy of errors and miscalculation that only worked because Mosaddegh had pissed of a good portion of his base. It's a shame that it worked, because it set the tone for regime' changes in the CIA to the present day.
