Great article. Several sources I've seen mention that the soldiers of both sides would, on picket duty in the quiet times between battles, declare local truces and swap rumors, tales, news, jokes, newspapers, and especially coffee (which the bluecoats had) for tobacco (that the graybellies had). Drove the officers nuts when they would find out.
