The Building up of cement / concrete into the floors and walls of buildings led to the ineffective bombing by Goering's Luftwaffe.
It wasn't totally ineffective of course, though after a point it did little damage to the city after a while.
It made for a desolate combat area where Soviet Snipers had a field day. The rubble of the buildings and the structural remnants made for yard by yard hell to advance into the city. Zhukov husbanded his forces well.
He would keep a greater portion away from the city. Keeping the Reserves ready , but not sent in.
Then afterwards, when the Germans were spent and exhausted, encircled and out of supplies/ food, water, munitions, he attacked with fresh well supplied forces that were the reserves. Paulis by then a newly made Field Marshal , unconditionally surrendered.
This Defeat, as well as the Defeat of Rommel in El Alamein , signaled the turning of the fates for Germany.

I read Beevor's account about 10 years ago and it's hard to believe this stuff happened the way it did. I'll certainly check out this book too.

How long has it taken us to peel the onion back from the official Soviet accounts - to the accounts of those fighting in the meatgrinder? Peaked my interest - I did not know that a Regimental Commander had kept a diary - much less the one who took the center of the city.
