A QUOTE FROM THE COMMENTS - "There was another, albeit unofficial part of Burkes sentence. At the time, when someone was legally sentenced to death and dissection, it was common practice (especially with high profile criminals) for doctors to take samples of skin from the body following the dissection. They would then tan the skin as you would cow leather and make wallets or bind books with it which they would then sell. One case in which this happened was that of Burke and Surgeons Hall, Edinburgh still have a small book bound in Burkes skin. I saw it during a visit to their museum when I was a student."
