Good morning, Rallypoint, and welcome to the December 19th edition of Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD): "The Tadpole Nebula in Gas and Dust." IC 410 (The Tadpole Nebula) lies some 12,000 light years away in the constellation Auriga (The Charioteer). Stars have been digitally removed in this image (go to the APOD page and mouse over the image to see them). Sulfur is represented in red, hydrogen in green, and oxygen in blue. The heads of the tadpoles (lower right) are believed to be sites of active star formation.

Sometimes I wonder how they get the names for these nebulas, but I guess the the other option of what it looks like might not go over well with the public...

Sperm racing to the egg, also known as the Tadpole Nebula ( IC410). The tadpoles are around 10 light-years long and might house ongoing star formation. It lies some 12,000 light-years away, toward the constellation Auriga. The gas structures in this picture are lit by the radiation from the open star cluster NGC1893 that lies in the center of the nebula.
