Good morning, Rallypoint, and welcome to the December 24th Christmas Eve edition of Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD): "Comet 2022 E3 ZTF." 'ZTF' stands for Zwicky Transient Facility. It is located at the Palomar Observatory run by the California Institute of Technology (CalTech), and is a public-private partnership aimed at a systematic study of the optical night sky. In fact, ZTF scans the entire Northern sky every two days. So it doesn't surprise me that ZTF first noticed comet C/2022 E3 ZTF earlier this year. This ZTF image is from December 19th.
When its orbit was analyzed, astronomers found that comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) would be closest to the Sun on January 12, 2023. and would be closest to the Earth in early February 2023. I'll keep my grandfather's binoculars handy.

Cpl Vic Burk Chiming in as a former resident of the Peoples Republic of Northern Virginia...yes. Fairfax County is pretty lit up. Loudoun County a bit less.
