Apparently significant damage was being done as a result of people being very careless in their climbing as well as chipping pieces off as souvenirs. Glad tyhey are starting to take care of them.

"Climbing the sacred site has been banned since 2008 due to efforts by the Mexican government to preserve the Mayan pyramids. " The little signs everywhere are pretty explanatory also.

I believe my friend was down there circa 82. He was a photography hobbyist that did really good work. When he told me his story, he said they had a long hike in.
