APOD: 2023 February 4 - NGC 2626 along the Vela Molecular Ridge

Good afternoon, Rallypoint, and welcome to the February 4th edition of Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD): "NGC 2626 along the Vela Molecular Ridge." The Vela Molecular Ridge is best viewed from the southern hemisphere, so when I noticed that Mark Hanson was one of the credited names on today's APOD its safe to assume this image was captured on his equipment placed in El Saucé, Chilé. NGC 2626 was first noted by John Herschel on January 2, 1835.
Radio telescope observations of the Vela Molecular Ridge region shows that it is composed of several clouds (A, B, C, and D), each with masses between 100,000 and 1,000,000 times the mass of our Sun. Clouds A, C and D are located at an average distance of 2300-3300 light years from Earth, while cloud B is located at a greater distance (6500 light years). NGC 2626 is associated with Cloud D.

APOD "Explanation: Centered in this colorful cosmic canvas, NGC 2626 is a beautiful, bright, blue reflection nebula in the southern Milky Way. Next to an obscuring dust cloud and surrounded by reddish hydrogen emission from large H II region RCW 27 it lies within a complex of dusty molecular clouds known as the Vela Molecular Ridge. NGC 2626 is itself a cloud of interstellar dust reflecting blue light from the young hot embedded star visible within the nebula. But astronomical explorations reveal many other young stars and associated nebulae in the star-forming region. NGC 2626 is about 3,200 light-years away. At that distance this telescopic field of view would span about 30 light-years along the Vela Molecular Ridge."
