N95 Masks are NOT to keep you from getting a disease, but to reduce the chances of an infected person from giving a disease to another person. They don't were not designed to keep all bacteria and viruses out of your body.
Like most things people put their own prejudices into the language they read as they assimilate the information. Much like people (Politicians especially) thinking AR means 'Auto Rifle" not the manufacturers name of 'Armalite Rifle' - N95 means the year the mask came out - not the percentage of its filtering capability. The N95 mask filter was invented by Taiwanese-American Peter Tsai and his team, and received its U.S. patent in 1995.
The 95 has nothing to do with how effective the mask is - though it is very effective the 1st time it is used. However the 3rd time it's not so good. The 10th time it is little more than a contaminated rag.
Cloth masks, sown and so nicely decorated for permanent usage for the life time of the wearer are worse. This is because the material, though washable, rarely is laundered. Certainly not every time its used. The only real way to filter atmospheric bacteria and viruses is by wearing a Biohazard Suit with a full face Protection Mask with replaceable filters.
The US Military has NB-100 Tactical Gas Mask (along with other types) which works well. but is a pain to wear. It costs between $250-$400. The filters lasts about 2 hours in a rich contaminated environment. The filters in bulk (which are not reusable) cost about $8 each - 100 per crate.
For civilians there are alternatives such as full face respirators at about $30/$45 with replaceable filters of decent prices, $80 to $100 per 25, that last well in a lightly contaminated environment for 3 to 7 days (depending on maker), the more expensive filters can be cleaned with alcohol then (outside the contaminated area) air-dried. If the N95 mask is your goto then you better buy cases of 500 per person to get through the next 6 months.
.
Even then as I stated above "N95 Masks are NOT to keep you from getting a disease, but to reduce the chances an infected person from giving a disease to another person. They don't were not designed to keep all bacteria and viruses out of your body."

Let’s hope so. I read an article and have posted it many times about how face masks in the OR do not prevent wound infections. Now I can’t find it.

I've seen some operations were the surgical team is wearing what looks like level 4 stuff to protect not themselves but the pacient.

Some basics like washing hands, not sneezing or coughing on others or crowding another space seemed to work, maybe more people should remember that instead of the panic. Face masks are more about protecting others, while You again breath in the same germs and carbon dioxide and trap them inside the mask while limiting oxygen intake. Maybe that's helpful to others but NOT Yourself.
