The AR is simply a semiautomatic rifle, period. It has little to no recoil, and it can handle magazines of differing capacities. Why do people own them? Simple, they are fun to shoot and with little to no recoil, they are a pleasure to shoot.
And, no, I don’t have a dog in this hunt. My rifle looks like an AR, it’s black, has a pistol grip (which is great since I have difficulty with a normal rifle grip due to limited motion of my right wrist s/p motorcycle wreck), and an adjustable stock, and it accepts all the same mags as an AR. The difference is it is a bolt action rifle. But due to the aforementioned features, it could be caught up in some bans, as an ‘assault’ rifle.
Regarding magazine capacity, I am lazy and when at the range I will use my 20 or 30 rd mags, it saves reloading. When hunting, I will use the 10 round mag.
If I were hunting hogs, definitely would use a 30 rd mag, preferably in a borrowed semiautomatic AR.

What most people don't realize is you can get better firepower by having two Semi Automatic handguns, one in each hand. Its just not that hard. Between Hunting and Range time I get to shoot several times a year, granted that is not a lot but its what I like to do.
I was amazed I got to shoot in a Virtual Gun Range and use two weapons and fire at moving targets on all sides of me, I missed on two of thirty targets. No there was no recoil but at the range I have fired a perfect round with each hand, it was some years back but I can still hold my own at the range with most of the young pups.
