Majority of United States Faces 'Elevated Risk' of Summer Power Blackouts Amid Green Energy Push

America's increased reliance on green energy in favor of coal and gas has a majority of the United States facing an "elevated risk" of summer power blackouts, according to a leading grid reliability watchdog. The North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) last week published its 2023 summer reliability assessment, which found that two-thirds of North America could face power shortages this summer during periods of extreme heat. That vulnerability, the watchdog group said, stems from America's increase in green power generation and decrease in fossil fuel power plants. While coal and natural gas plants can be turned on and off at the flip of a switch, green alternatives such as wind and solar rely on favorable weather conditions to operate at full capacity. If those conditions aren't met, power demand can outpace supply.
"The system is closer to the edge," NERC director of reliability assessment and performance analysis John Moura said last week. "More needs to be done."

MAJ Byron Oyler - Also I'm not against research and developing new concepts but presently they are NOT ready for the market. Some of the Hybrid vehicles on the other hand combine electric and gasoline with when needed the gasoline kicking in and recharging the electric system and keeping it running and actually getting as much as 50 miles on a gallon of gas. No plug in's for electricity needed but not very many stops at a gas station either. Certainly even regular vehicle gasoline helps charge electric accessories or needed components such as alternators which feeds other electric items in a vehicle. Massive batterie packs are just NOT a solution to anything.

MAJ Byron Oyler - I believe there are many problems to electric vehicles and some car manufacturing companies are backing away, Toyota is keeping a line of gas powered and hybrids over electric. Toyota found hybrids actually produce less pollution than totally electric vehicles and Ferrari is staying gas. The problems of rare earth metals and charging times plus battery life etc make electric iffy for me. There was a report on electric school buses that is far from flattering.

SMSgt Lawrence McCarter - Back in the early 80's, I drove a Dodge 024. On a road trip from Annapolis MD to Tucson AZ I averaged 51mpg. The last year of the model was 1982. Because of changes to emission standards, the "same" engine in the follow-on model "Charger" had an advertised 31mpg. A 40% reduction in mileage that achieved an 11% reduction in emissions. But you and I don't drive to burn gallons of gas. The net result was an increase of 46% of toxic emissions per highway mile.

LTC David Brown - I am trying to get a VA job that is 30min one way and I love the idea of electric but like you there is to much pushing me that is a poor investment. I am not crazy about hybrids as the attraction to electric is no oil changes, no radiator flushes, no transmission fluid, etc. I have my F150 (155,000) and Jeep and just need something for that daily drive. Looking at a Kia with 1.6L engine.

When you look at Europe's attempt with communism after WWII you see a lot of supply chain issues. I do not know how it is rooted in the goals of communists but I suspect it is a means of controlling the people. Pushing the US towards everything electric knowing the grid cannot handle it seems to be more of going down that pathway. I hope the dumb a*( of NJ, NYC, and Cali stay out of TX when they have issues with the supply chain more than we are having now.

Majority of the population centers... I live 25 miles from a Gas fired power plant. I think we are in good shape. Plus there's a 30 mile long stretch of wind turbines... oh wait... They don't turn much this time of year. Our wind season is fall and winter.
