Facebook and Instagram will block all news articles in California if state lawmakers pass a bill meant to funnel money from the tech platforms to media organizations, a Meta spokesman threatened on Wednesday.
The California Journalism Preservation Act would essentially tax the advertising profits platforms make from distributing news articles. Under the measure, some 70% of the money collected from the so-called "usage fee" would support newsrooms throughout the state.
The bill's sponsor, Assemblywoman Buffy Wicks, a Democrat who represents Oakland, argues the measure could provide a "lifeline" to local news organizations that have seen advertising revenue plunge.
"As news consumption has moved online, community news outlets have been downsized and closing at an alarming rate," Wicks said at a hearing on the bill earlier this month, pointing out that more than 100 California news organizations have gone under in the past decade.

In related news, Assemblywoman Wicks is introducing a bill that will tax cell phone usage because switchboard operators have been hit hard with these new fangled technologies.
I noticed Danielle Coffey from the News Media Alliance saying all the standard buzz-words - they need to pay their 'fair share' ... Their threat to take action so they don't pay is "undemocratic and unbecoming". At least he didn't say it was "unpatriotic" of them not to pay.

Let's not forget that all states will eventually have a road tax when they no longer collect royalties from gasoline, Diesel, and Propane. Notice electricity bills have been going up! It's done by Design because those same leftist state lawmakers will also Institute a carbon tax. Prime Minister Trudeau of Canada Institute of carbon tax even though this Providence in a couple of others fought it and lost in the Supreme Court. Taxes spend liberals in Canada, tax and spend leftist Democrats in the USA.
