Unfortunately, most of Anna Maria’s story is lost to history. She may have been born around 1735, which means she would have been fighting in the war when she was in her 40s. She was married to John Lane, who enlisted not too long after the war began. It is assumed that she never formally enlisted in the army, but she did fight with the army, dressed in men’s clothing.

PO1 Kevin Dougherty most of history was passed on verbally. Not a lot of people knew how to write or had the tools.

Actually, American literacy rates in the mid 1799s was quite high, estimated to be as high as 95% for men and 65% for women. For example Thomas Paine's "Common Sense" sold over 400,000 copies in the first year, roughly equivalent to four million copies today.
I suspect most people today would struggle to make it through "Common Sense" today, and not just because of the sometimes archaic language.
