A large part of this is self-inflicted. I went to high school in the 70's. Teachers and counselors were loathe to talk about military service because of Vietnam. Selfless service was not ever mentioned by them. Only my family members who served, their friends who had served and friends who had family who served ever talked about being a part of something bigger than ourselves.
I'm sure that hasn't changed and has probably gotten worse with the way things are right now.
Even with that, I didn't enlist until almost 5 years after graduation.

LTC Trent Klug- Sir,I enlisted in the Army way back in 1965, most of my friends also went into Service voluntarily ,but then again we were in that demographic our Country counted on to serve.I feel today’s generation has a vastly different view of duty ,honor,Country and maybe they could be right considering the treatment of Veterans by our government after Vietnam and our seemingly endless wars in the Mideast,I proudly served in Vietnam and never regretted that decision,those that serve voluntarily have all my admiration and respect.

Civilian companies are offering comparable benefits, Higher pay and the young generation has lost the meaning of patriotism and has no desire to join according to an article I was reading last night. They are disenchanted. Some of this can be attributed to the disastrous extrication from Afghanistan.

I agree. There is nothing recent to point to a good reason to join, other than legacies from families who already have had members who served. Yet, I have five children, ages 27-14, and NONE are interested in service, having had a father who served for 22 years, and missing me during deployments. Compound recent debacles and humiliations, WOKENESS and aimlessness.
