Ercolano is also amazing! Lesser known than Pompeii, Ercolano has some tremendously preserved ruins because it got more of the hot mud/clay that encased many things.

LOL... probably because you're like most folks that use the proper name of the town itself. I referred to it as Ercolano because I was stationed in Italy. Because of that, I tend to use Italian names often when referring to Italy. That whole area is awesome to visit and feel the history there. While we all learned about the Roman Empire, walking the grounds and seeing it is so cool! I saw the Roman aqueducts in Tunisia and thought 'wow, if I had a crane that could lift that sectiion back up to the (guessing?) 10 meter height

I have always been amazed at the way the Volcano was able to preserve an ancient city and a large number of its inhabitants.
