Many of you will recognize this kind of mannequin that you saw in the test site of Area 51 showing Indiana Jones trying to get away from the Russians and running into a small town not realizing it's a test town near a nuclear bomb.
They used a lower-yield 30-kiloton bomb instead of a hydrogen bomb for this test.
The fat man bomb of Nagasaki was 21 kilotons. The Hiroshima bomb was 15 kilotons so this test used an atomic bomb twice the strength of the Little Boy bomb.
I marked this as collateral damage estimation because they used different building techniques to see how they would hold up under a nuclear blast a mile away.
Buildings were built of different construction techniques to see how they would survive a nuclear blast. You will not see a refrigerator with Indiana Jones in it being shot across the desert.
Civil Defense employees monitored the blast. A reporter went to look at the destruction the day after the nuclear blast. I don't think the area would be decontaminated by then. I don't know what the half-life is of radioactivity but 24 hours after the blast seems too soon to me. I know most of the radiation would have been blown away in many directions depending on the wind currents.

I am sure many of the people who were present at the blast were Afflicted with cancer years later. If those people smoked, I'm sure it was worse.

Jack, do you know what they possibly revised in the 1964 update? I know it's been almost 60 years since you started seeing these. I'm sure that what has been redacted is no longer classified.

It's really sad that the homes in Southern California don't have basements because of the high water table. My home in Canada has a basement and most homes in Canada have basements. I know it only gives limited protection because the basement design was an enclosed room within the basement and the basements downstairs don't have any enclosure except by the water heater and the gas furnace. Not sure if that makes it any more safe at all?

LTC (Join to see) A lot has been declassified, just the basic ball design which I just saw described in a promo for the movie Oppenheimer a week or so ago couldn't be uttered outside the classroom. There are a lot of other things involved with maintaining the bombs that I'm sure are still classified though.

One of my best friend's dad worked at the test site from the late 40's through to sometime in the 1960's. He continued working elsewhere in Nevada until he retired and moved to Klamath Falls, Oregon in the early 1970's. He had a government issued card that directed all medical bills to an office for payment. Yes, there were many, many medical bills due to the irradiation of his observing and working around the nuclear test facilities.
