The UDT badge is an anchor representing the U.S. Navy, crossed with a cocked flintlock pistol and trident. The flintlock pistol represents land warfare and a state of constant readiness, while the trident represents Nepture and the maritime nature of their work. The SEAL insignia has a similar design but incorporates a bald eagle. The eagle symbolizes the airborne operations and holds the trident and a cocked flintlock pistol. However, as UDT teams transferred to the SEAL Teams, the officer SEAL insignia was selected as the official unit insignia.

My best friend is a Seal Team 1 guy from the Viet Nam days when there were only 2 Teams. We always had a Seal Team working with us on a rotation basis. He was at the same place I was at the same time I was there but we didn't know each other then. We could have laid eyes on each other for all we knew. I owe a lot of my sobriety to him. When I quit drinking, I had some heavy-duty demons from the War rear their ugly heads and God put him in my life at just the right time to counsel me.

Great bunch of guys, SEALS, in 93 our SWAT team had CQB training with them. No names, just nicknames.
