"After covering business and working as an editor at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel for 30 years, I became a columnist in 2008. It was a dream.
As a youth, I always read a newspaper. My parents subscribed to the Milwaukee Sentinel, which I loved reading so I could be an expert on the news quiz at Jackie Robinson Middle School. In high school, I became an intern at the Sentinel. Sometimes, I had to catch a ride to assignments. I never left.
I took on the columnist role after I returned from a year as a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University, following in the footsteps of two mentors — Greg Stanford and Eugene Kane, both accomplished Black journalists at the paper.
I wanted to write about issues that affected the community in the spirit of Greg, and I wanted to address inequity and class like Eugene. My boss on the editorial page, Ricardo Pimentel, started me out writing a column every other week.
As you might imagine, readers reacted to my writing. We’d get emails and sometimes phone calls, but it was still a time when we’d regularly get letters in the mail — usually handwritten, sometimes typed out.
Most were positive. A few were uncomplimentary, but one stood out after I wrote a piece critical of Milwaukee Public Schools’ poor reading scores and the lack of urgency to change it.
It was the first time I opened a letter to see myself called the N-word".

When you’re in middle school and you learn 1st hand cops lynch black peoples slightly older than you :
“Eric Adway was 67 inches tall, and the pole where the shoelaces were hung to the floor was only 65 inches of height.
He was booked into the Milwaukee City Jail at
749 W. state street at about 11pm that evening.
On May 3, 1984 at about 1pm, he was found hung in a jail cell by his shoelaces.
His name is Eric Adway
When the news of his death made way throughout the city, the Milwaukee Police Department made sure to control the narrative by publicly declaring Eric the leader of the 2-4 gang, and the Medical Examiner ruling his death a suicide.”

1.) Age 23 : Assaulted by Milwaukee Police Department, hit w/ butt of gun on top of head, got staples from Milwaukee County Hospital. Why? Oh, because I used the law and drove to a safe place ... I was being pulled over for a “busted taillight” yet didn’t receive a ticket for the taillight, nor was I charged w/ “evasion of a police officer”. Only cited for driving without license.

2.) Age 25 : Assaulted by Milwaukee Sheriff Department while in custody inside the sheriff department, for asking how long it would take to get booked for driving w/o license, placed in hand cuffs (At my most Vulnerable & Inside the County Jail Booking Area) slammed into left corner elevator and choked while hand cuffed, Milwaukee County Hospital for root canal, replacement of tooth. No resisting/Assault or Battery on a Cop … because I just asked a question.

MILWAUKEE COUNTY PASSES ORDINANCE TO ADVANCE RACIAL EQUITY AND IMPROVE HEALTH OUTCOMES
Milwaukee County leaders commit to eliminating institutional racism by addressing County polices, practices and power structures through a racial equity lens
Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele today with Milwaukee County Board Chairwoman Marcelia Nicholson, County Executive-elect David Crowley and Director, Nicole Brookshire with the Office on African American Affairs (OAAA) announced the signing of an ordinance that commits Milwaukee County to advancing racial equity and eliminating health disparities. The ordinance, unanimously passed by the County Board, moves forward Milwaukee County’s vision that by achieving racial equity, Milwaukee is the healthiest county in Wisconsin.
“For hundreds of years, government institutions have been connected to the atrocities against those with a historical lineage to slavery. Now because we know better, we must do better. Passing this ordinance is one way we can address the policies and practices that have contributed to racial inequities in our communities,” said County Executive Abele.

In Wisconsin, SPLC is now tracking 15 hate groups. This includes anti-Muslim groups, neo-Nazis, an anti-LGBT church, Black Nationalist and White Nationalist organizations.
Seven of the 15 organizations are statewide. Others in Wisconsin are located in Monroe, Milwaukee, Oostburg, Fitchburg, Hudson and Shawano.
The groups named by SPLC as active in Wisconsin include Act for America, The Right Stuff, American Freedom Party, Nation of Islam, Citizens for the St. Croix Valley, Pilgrims Covenant Church, White Boy Society and New Order.
The 15 named organizations puts the number of Wisconsin groups higher than neighboring states Minnesota and Iowa, but at about half of the number operating in Illinois and Michigan. The number nationwide totals 1,020 SPLC-cited hate groups.
The map, updated earlier this year for all of 2018, shows a 30% rise over the four-year time span coinciding with President Donald Trump’s campaign and presidency.
SPLC communications associate Bob Hopkinson notes that his organization’s expertise is primarily specific to groups and ideologies rather than individual states, but he points to another map where SPLC tracks hate instances by state.
The ‘Map of white supremacist flyering in the U.S.‘ gleans its information from news articles, social media and tips submitted to the SPLC on hateful flyers and banners displayed and distributed.
On this map of overt displays, Wisconsin accounts for 27 out of 2445 incidents nationwide, with a spike in incidents in April and May of 2019. Since the beginning of 2018, 27 flyers were reported in Wisconsin, three of them displayed on college campuses. The number includes 19 from Patriot Front and three from Identity Evropa.
