COMMENT - "The newer ones have a laser in them that paints the target all the way in. The sensor inside is a multiple element quadrature photodiode that measures differential signals and range. It also has a backup radar and thermal seeker in it to switch to for inclement weather, but they are less precise. The photodiode in them works very well for vibration compensation when used with an interferometer."
