When did S1 and S4 start needing a different Branch? Both used to be Branch Immaterial.

It's both. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the "issues" of staffing. Want a real headache, try having ARSHOUTH explain their lack of wanting to support (with proper approved slots) the Army Forces BN at Soto Cano in Honduras. I'm a Reserve Preventive Medicine and this last rotation I was pulled up to be their OPS SGM. My OPS NCO was a Reserve SFC Medic, who also was the S4 NCOIC. My S1 personnel were two Reservists and one National Guard 42A. I had not any S6 personnel. The only Active Duty personnel in the BN HQ was the CDR, the CSM, the S1 OIC (luckily Admin Branch), S3 Officer (Armor Officer) and the S4 (Logistics). All other positions were turned "off' by ARSOUTH but still needed to be "filled" IOT operate the BN.

MSG (Join to see) - The S-1,2 and 4 slots were where Captains in a Battalion went after command time (on occasion before,if we carried an excess officer or two) waiting for enough time in grade to make Major. At Major, you either went S-3 or went to one of the G slots. I didn't change branch's when I went to S-1. How do they expect you to learn how to be BN or Brigade CO without understanding at least most of the staff jobs in the Battalion?

CPT Lawrence Cable - That's like asking how many licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie pop
