Having served in Europe in the mid 80's I can't imagine how they got to this point. Then I look at our Country and think, well a lot of their countries are led by presidents as capable as President Biden. They try to buy their way out of any problem they get into.

This violates national sovereignty.
But that is kind of the whole point of the EU. And is why the UK decided to leave the EU (rightly, IMHO, despite how messy it has been).
The EU is a VERY young US. A bunch of sovereign states that have banded together for collective strength. And these days, our collective states have no true sovereignty. EU is on the path - and it a path those sovereign states chose for themselves.
