I got to go on a recruiting cruise on the Eagle in 1962. One heck of an experience. I was a second alternate to the USCGA when I graduated HS in 1964. Actually received a letter informing me that a slot was available but I was already in college in Virginia on a full scholarship so passed.

I don't know if I'd want to crew on a "tall" ship back in the day... between cargo, US Naval, and whaling; what choices did one have for being under sail cloth... Being Army wasn't much better, what with Indian wars and chasing Mexican Outlaws on the southern border... What I see as beneficial to Sail and the U.S. Navy, is its action in the "Barbary Pirates Way' in the Mediterranean Sea.
