It's disheartening to hear of people making money from accomplishments that never happened. Thirty years is a stiff penalty.

Given the comment, “Acts of stolen valor are especially egregious as they distract from sacrifices of those who were truly injured defending our nation,” FBI Assistant Director in Charge James Smith said in a statement. It begs the question of why Senator Richard Bloomfield got away with lies about serving in Vietnam during his campaign for the Senate.

While Richard Blumenthal was running for higher office in the Senate that paid a higher salary Blumenthal made statements on several occasions implying or directly claiming that he had served in Vietnam. For example, he said "We have learned something important since the days that I served in Vietnam" and "When we returned from Vietnam, I remember the taunts, the verbal and even physical abuse we encountered."[1]

These statements were found to be false as Blumenthal (D) had never actually served in Vietnam. His actual military service was limited to the Marine Reserves in the United States and he requested deferments from serving in Vietnam.

Blumenthal acknowledged that he had "misspoken" about his military service and said he regretted the errors, though he did not initially apologize. He later issued a formal apology.
