Melody Jones said she thinks her son, Staff Sgt. Gordon Black, was set up by his girlfriend, whom she identified as Aleksandra Vashchuk.
“I think she convinced him to come there,” Jones said in a video interview from her home in Cheyenne, Wyoming. “He wanted to see her for the last time before going home, and so he went there.”

I watched other news stories about him that paint a troubling picture. He has a child and was separated from his wife, but not divorced. His parents warned him to not travel there due to the ongoing political situation. He was supposed to change duty station back to CONUS and this was unauthorized.

PO1 William "Chip" Nagel; LTC Eugene Chu - I read where the divorce papers were ready for him to sign upon his return. The divorce was filed approximately 18 months ago. The various TikTok videos from his Russian girlfriend's account show him parroting a lot of Russian propaganda with his girlfriend. The military was aware of his relationship with the Russian as they got into some kind of an argument while in South Korea and she was deported by the South Koreans. As Yogi Berra said, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him think. Bet he's enjoying that Russian hospitality now.

PO1 William "Chip" Nagel Black's mother said the woman was later deported back to Russia - and admitted she felt like her son was the victim of a trap.
Speaking to Good Morning America, Jones said: "I knew something was going to happen. I felt like he was being set up by her."
