The Dana squid has all the tools of a top ocean predator, including a pair of brilliant "headlights" that it flashes at the moment it goes in for the kill. They're intended to dazzle the prey, to hold the victim stationary for those few moments longer until it can be captured in a death embrace. Scientists have just filmed the squid in full attack mode on a research cruise in the central Pacific. The event occurred about 1,000m down, where conditions are near pitch black.

Same technique that Police and Special Forces use with "flash bombs". Blind them and finish them off. My favorite Squid technique is the male skin coloring. One one side of their body (that the female they are courting can't see) is an angry "don't come near her" color. The side the female can see, is a calming, gentle, pick me color. Kind of like a redneck in a bar.
