My wife escaped from Cuba in the late 1960's Sgt Nick Marshall. She was able to bring her parents with her by working as a teenager and helping to pay their way. Many Cubans in the 1970's came over and became productive citizens. In the 198o]s Cuba released many prisoners to this nation which caused some problems at local and state levels. Cubans had an advantage since they came from the same climate as Florida and spoke a language common to many on the southern United States.
Syrian refugees came to this nation from 1/3 of the way around the world. As a former French colony French is more common than English to them. We have had about 2,000 come to this nation from Syria since the civil war began in 2011.
Communist infiltrators were not as interested in mass casualty making as ISIS and the other wahhabi doctrine believing muslim terrorist groups.
Expect the spin doctors to compare the vietnamese immigration, the cuban immigration, etc to Syrian refugees. Vietnamese immigration is closer to Syrian immigration since both brought people from very far away with few familiar with the language. The Vietnamese did not bring communism even though communism was rampant in Vietnam at the end.

My point of my discussion is the comparison of threats of infiltration by our enemies at the time, Communists then and Radical Islamists now not so much a comparison of Cubans and Syrians. I hear a lot of right wing stories not wanting refugees because of "infiltrators and terrorists" in their midst, sounds similar to warnings of communist infiltrators, which I'm pretty sure did happen

Sgt Nick Marshall - you probably did live through the 1960's when radical marxism and communism was part of the left wing revolutionary movements - Huey Newton, the weathermen, etc. We didn't need communists to infiltrate us since communism had been here since the 1930s when it was popular in upper society - education, economic theory, political theory, etc.
Radical Islam was virtually unknown in this country before the 1960's when the various palestinian terrorist movements were coming into power - PLA, PLO, etc.
We tended to have americans killed overseas as tourists or as military personnel by Islamic movements in the 1970's and 1980's.
9/11/2001 was when wahhabi doctrine Islam [birthed in the late 19th century in Saudi Arabia] adherents declared war on us. al Qaeda had infiltrated us, blended in as non-religious Muslims, obtained drivers licenses, etc. Adherents of Communism and wahhabi Islam both tend to take the longer term view of taking several generations to achieve their goals. They tend to use personal relationships to establish networks which are segregated from each other to ensure that infiltration of their ranks will not unravel all followers of their respective doctrines.
Since this nation has been moving incrementally in many ways towards socialism since FDR with many national movements versus bottom up movements. Communists would not need to have a revolution to achieve their goals since we already are moving towards universal health care, universal retirement through social security, etc.
