The military shouldn't have to do that actually. Get the supplies to the local government for distribution, national guard, yes. Try and get public infrastructre back at least partially, national guard yes. Active duty, NO. Beyond immediate need this is NOT the job of the active duty military. National guard has a state mission. The public services should be the ones actually passing out food. FEMA should be organizing and gathering resources. How long are they to remain dependent on the federal government? We have to work to get them back self sufficient. Forcing the public sector to do their jobs by taking care of their people is one way to make that happen.

I disagree. The military has traditionally been the ones who have done this in emergencies. FEMA has few resources, and it's hard to force people to be self sufficient when they have no power, no water, no food, their roads are destroyed, and the people who could deliver the supplies are trying to take care of their own families. The military were the only ones who could provide this service quickly and efficiently to get a stop-gap distribution going.

National guard, yes. Active duy military, NO, not beyond immediate relief efforts. The active duty military is not designed for that. The national guard has a state mission that can be seen to include relief efforts.

How about we forget the job titles and remember that they're American citizens 1st. Humanity calls for helping one another whenever its possible by any means, let alone Americans citizens. Its sad that we have the means to help them more but the "not my job" reasons are even pronounced.

When we start using the active duty military for certain things inside the country that they were not designed for it puts us on a slippery slope as a society. Our civilian leaders need to get their shit together. The civilian leadership in PR need to do the same.

He said military should not be distributing " President Donald Trump said military personnel assisting in Hurricane Maria recovery efforts "shouldn't have to be" distributing food in Puerto Rico, again casting the U.S. territory's challenges as partially self-inflicted during a Monday press conference."
