“Over a half century ago, while I was still a child, I recall hearing a number of old people offer the following explanation for the great disasters that had befallen Russia: “Men have forgotten God; that’s why all this has happened.”

Since then I have spent well-nigh 50 years working on the history of our revolution; in the process I have read hundreds of books, collected hundreds of personal testimonies, and have already contributed eight volumes of my own toward the effort of clearing away the rubble left by that upheaval.

But if I were asked today to formulate as concisely as possible the main cause of the ruinous revolution that swallowed up some 60 million of our people, I could not put it more accurately than to repeat: “Men have forgotten God; that’s why all this has happened”
Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

Maj John Bell - Not really. He claims to be Orthodox and the ROC patriarch supports him, i.e., god is on his side...

Capt Gregory Prickett -

He (Putin) CLAIMS to be ROC. Is that claim factual? Or is it a self-serving claim to aid him in keeping power? I believe the article builds the case for the latter. Is there any evidence of his faith beyond his self-declaration? Did he attend church in Soviet Russia? Does he regularly attend Church now? Is there any indication of him actively pursuing a ROC Christian path? There is the undisputable fact that being a practicing lay person was an impediment to advancement in the former Soviet Union, particularly the KGB.

From your article:
"Since taking power in 1999, President Putin has regularly professed and used religious connections to the Orthodox Church for political gain. In doing so, he has re-crafted Russian society and placed himself at the center of a newly established Russian theological identity"

Putin is not the first and certainly won’t be the last leader to ABUSE [emphasis mine] religious faith as justification to conduct heinous actions.

From the Link:

Within Russia he (Patriarch Kirill) had earned a reputation as a "zapadnik" — a pro-Westerner — but likely maintained deep links to Russia's state apparatus, principally the KGB. Membership of the Soviet spy agency was a requirement for any religious figure who travelled abroad, according to a paper called The Mikhailov Files: Patriarch Kirill and the KGB, by historian and human rights activist Felix Corley.
