In all my years of umpiring I never saw a successful hidden ball trick, these kids pulled it off nice.
Very poor baserunning coaching. The second you see a pitcher disengage the rubber get the hell back to your base no matter what... or look like a fool.

It was clear the pitcher disengaged the rubber with a quick back step before he faked the throw, if he didn't it would have been a balk and all base runners would have been awarded one base.

I know it is legal. I know it is an old "trick.". I know that within the world of baseball, where tricking the other team is a time honored tradition, this is even considered to be a great play.
It still feels like cheating to me. There is no honor in this win. Yes, a W is a W. But you win or lose the game on your talent and grit and training and perseverance and all that stuff. Not on your ability to be deceitful. At least you SHOULD.
Yes, I'm a fuddy duddy.

Not an old fuddy duddy, it appears you just don't appreciate the baseball rules. As an umpire it's our job (or in my case used to be my job) so that no one gains an "advantage according to the rules". Lawyers are the first to point out not to confuse what is legal with justice; they are two different things. In the case of this trick play and the balk rule, without getting into the weeds, I'll just say it's is a delicate balance between not giving the pitcher or the base runner an advantage, and leave it at that. At the end of the day it was terrible baserunning. Everyone is supposed to know the rules... even if your doing little league.

SFC (Join to see) I know the rules - or at least enough of them. I know this play was perfectly legal.
I accept that the play was legal and the win was valid. I just call it bush league and don't like it. Kind of like the 2020 election.
