I am no Korean war aficionado, but I get the impression that deep offensive maneuvers were blunted and counterattacked.

All the warning signs were there that China was going to attack. Douglas MacArthur set himself up for failure and the war became a stalemate.

LTC Greg Henning - Yeah that must have been one of the worst intelligence blunders in history. For some reason I think General MacArthur's HQ was in Japan.
I do know that when General Ridgeway took over in Korea he told Division and Corps Commanders to move their HQs closer to the front and fired generals who had no fight in them. He had a week to plan a defense of South Korea North of Seoul but was pushed back South of Seoul. Once again I will allude to an army that progresses too far and is counterattacked.
General Ridgeway had a unique gift. He had a photographic mind. He remembered every single soldier's name he met. Before his counteroffensive General Ridgeway did a reconnaissance and conducted a map reconnaissance. He memorized the location of every terrain feature like hills, mountains, rivers, and roads. He knew what the Division and Corps Commanders would see on the ground. He used this knowledge to move his army from one phase line to another. This was his method to control the counterattack and it worked. Many think he saved the Korean War.
