Sometimes we don't appreciate how much we have done in our lives. So I have folks go back to when they were five years old, and tell them what you have done.
At five years old, there is no way I could imagine I would: Learn how to read and write, cook, balance a check book, do laundry and play sports. Or fly in an airplane, cross an ocean in a ship, or ride a bike. And then there is this list that the Five year old me would have found simply amazing:
1) Drive a car.
2) Live by myself.
3) Finish School
4) Kiss a girl.
5) Fall in Love.
6) Make enough money to buy stuff, like a TV, Car, or House.
7) Have girlfriends that liked me just the way I am.
8) Travel outside my city. Later my State. Later my country.
9) See the Ocean, let alone all of them.
10) Run a Marathon.
11) Have my heart broken.
12) Find a true love.
13) Get Married.
14) Have children.
15) Have Grandchildren.
16) Grow old!
17) Cut your own hair the day before your first School Photo.
And , Oh Yeah, Join the Army!

PS:

You would be a marvel to your five year old self. They would be so proud of you.

18. The memories of meeting soldiers you became life long friends with.

19. The sad memories of going to ramp ceremonies in a war zone like Iraq.

20. Losing your first sergeant in Afghanistan. He was on a Separate eventual reconstruction team. They made the mistake of having the commander and the first sergeant in the same vehicle. A week before they were supposed to come back. They got hit with a suicide car bomber who had excellence with the vehicle and so soldiers. I knew had to go to his funeral and a close casket scenario.

21. Retiring from the military and receiving a pension. I had joined the military as a hobby. I never expected it to be a career. Even though I wasn't the National Guard and army reserve. Total active duty time, including schools, was about 8 years out of the 27.

22. Getting satisfaction of mentoring people here on Rally point.

I'm sure more People can add to this list.

And this is one of the reasons I admire folks like you. People have seen what you’ve seen and still come back and make their children smile or their wife giggle. It just makes the rest of us think how strong you must be.

I had to laugh, because I cut my wife's hair now, and she thinks I do a wonderful job. I guess the picture of my younger self doesn't scare her. LOL
