Date of Rank used to be a serious thing. Among the officer corps, West Point DOR was established first given them lead consideration for command and promotions, followed by other sources of commissions--ROTC (including Ivy League mil schools such as Norwich); Direct Commission /Battlefield Commission, OCS... Among NCOs the DOR was simply established first Alphbetically, later by "actual" number ranking for selection when points were awarded/boards centralized.... what does it mean today? Does is affect a RIF?

SGM (Join to see), I think DOR affects the promotion list order for the next rank, right? Plus the promotion zones are based on DOR.

Yes, sir, it does. However it used to be one of the first considerations for command, and of course for West Pointers....it also is supposed to allow for a clear path to succession beyond rank in combat situations. Although I doubt people have time to compare ID Cards then.

Most importantly, it is the first determiner of the soldier in charge. Of course, if same go alphabetically, BASD, age, etc.

DOR matters greatly for rating chains in proper units. You have two SGTs or two SSGs and there's a set of E-5/E-6 or E-6/E-7 slots and a rating chain that goes along with it. You bet that months/years TIG will make a difference unless one of them is functionally retarded.
