I did have NRA shooting medals as a kid and owned a .22 rifle as well as a .410 shotgun. My friends all had rifles also and some also .410 shotguns. We were always very careful with firearm, never had a problem and no one even worried about seeing us go down the road with them. Some of the guys went hunting and there was a nearby sand pit We used to set up targets to shoot. There wasn't any around there and We didn't bother anyone. Sometimes We even went to the Town dump and shot rats and the dump keeper thought that was great !

If the people claiming they are concerned about "Gun Safety" were really concerned about safety gun safety would be a mandatory subject is schools, starting in Kindergarten with something very much like the NRA Eddie Eagle program (which does not require any actual guns), repeated in upper grades (minus the chicken suit).
Somewhere about the 6th grade they need to offer real safety training rather than pretending that "don't touch" is any more realistic for guns than it is for sex.
