What could a "string" of lights in the nite sky (some 3 to 400 m) long possibly be?

Item was moving rather slowly from NW to SE over our home in the upper Piedmont of NC. I was walking dogs at the time and found this so extraordinary that I called it in to 9-11 just to make it a matter of record. Any ideas? Hoping there is a scientific explanation.

My guess is that it would be a Starlink deployment. You might want to check the date of your sighting and see if it matches up with the SpaceX May launch schedule. The following linked website shows upcoming SpaceX launches followed by past launches for the month of May 2024:
