In the Army we called them the CAR-15 or the XM-177. When I first joined the AF, my unit had the GAU-5 which is pretty much the same thing. What I loved about carrying the GAU over the M-16's is that the GAU was fully automatic instead of the 3 round burst of the M-16.

As a LE troop I had the option of an M16 or the GAU, always took the GAU.

The M16s with the three round burst were many years later, in Vietnam and that era they were full automatic. The changeover time Mentioned by SRA Monette here of around 1992 seems about right.

Our unit in Vietnam it was M16s except out K9 troops carried the shorter CAR 15 as the other hand was on the leash of a large German Shepard mos of the time. The sling allowed them to hang the shorter version in the ready and the ready position in front of them. This picture of an Air Force dog handler You will notice His left hand controls the leash and the right hand the CAR15.
