Remember, a firearm is just a tool .... here we are talking carbines which historically are used for close in fighting and shooting up to 300 yards max effective range. The terminal ballistics (inside the body ballistics) starts to fail at 250 yards. However, based on the success of the M1 Carbine in WWII, the U.S. Military requested a carbine variant of the M16 almost immediately after its adoption in 1964. IMHO the M1 Carbine was the "bee's knees" and a very successful weapon in the right hands and situation; superior to the M4.
That is why my tool box (aka Gun Safe) you'll find several deferent types of "long guns" in various calibers. I also have planned to own and have several "uppers" of various calibers to make maximum use of my AR-platform lowers. Keep in mind that this variety has complicated my ammunition stockage and reloading operation, but I think it is worth it.

I have a couple MW Carbine replicas. Fortunately I was lucky enough to experience an original while I was in AIT. The replicas have made multiple trips to the gunsmith while original functioned perfectly.

It can be an effective tool, but that also depends on things like the specific gas operation, caliber, etc.
To me if you change the gas impingement to a gas piston that's one way to elevate its reliability. Throw in a Tubbs buffer spring as well (rated for 100k cycles vs a lot less with standard buffer springs). For caliber? Well if you want to stay the 5.56/224 route then replace the barrel with a 224 Wylde. If you want to up the caliber capabilities there's the 6.5 Grendel, 6.8, 300 Blackout, etc. If you want something in the 7.62 range you're going to want an AR-10 variant at that point.
