Old people thoughts: Being there. So just a few minutes ago my daughter called and asked if I could watch the kids for an hour and a half at dinner time. Her and her hubby have some kind of meeting they have to go. I said sure. As if having the Grandkids over was ever a burden. And she is bringing dinner, so I don't have to cook either. So being an old guy...I thought about how just "being there" for someone is such a gift.

When I talk to those of you who have been in Combat, I notice the same thing. The Band of Brother's bond is based on that simple fact: Being there. They were there when stuff went down, and they will be there when you need them forevermore. Maybe a phone call, maybe a beer. Maybe to talk about a divorce, a change in job, or life in general. The topic isn't important, what is important is you being there. You picked up the phone, drove over to sit for a bit. Listened to what they had to say.

My daughter thanked me over and over again with gratitude. The same gratitude all of us feel when someone was there for us. Could be something as simple as watching the kids for an hour so they can have a cup of coffee on their own in peace and quiet. Or it could be something that only you can know, and never share.

Being there. So simple. Yet so profound. I guess growing older made me appreciate the little things. My Dad used to say we all handle the big stuff, because we have no choice. It is the little stuff that sneaks in and destroys friendships, relationships, and community.

So just be there.

AMEN! Our connections are some of the the most important things we have in life.
No one should ever feel lonely. I can be alone and still have connections. I can also be with 5,000 people on a CVN, and still feel lonely. Alone is a physical condition, Lonely is a mental condition.
