I've been in for 5 years just picked up my SGT. I'm torn on whether to get out or stay in for another term. I understand its my decision but I'm curious if anyone has advice that helped them make this decision.

I greatly appreciate all of the advice and suggestions, and I'm thinking I'll stay in and see how it goes. I have options on the outside however, I think the stability in the military will help overall.

Although retaining soldiers in the Regular Army and Reserve Components is the desired outcome of the Army Career Counseling process, preparation of soldiers to be more productive citizens in or out of the Army is the overall objective.

Stay in. The economy sucks right now and is getting worse. If you do decide to get out, make sure you have employment secured before departing.

Go where your heart tells you. When is the economy EVER great? You look to be a hard charger. I bet you'll do well anywhere you decide to go.

I was in your shoes. I had E-6 orders, but the bar was too high. I got out. I wish I could go back and do a retake. I would have retired 15 years ago had I stayed. But I still look at my time in the military as the most honorable and challenging job I've had. It was a bunch of sh** at the time, but that all changes. There is always sh** wherever you go.

Find yourself a ROTC college campus; Attend that college, work as a Sgt and get ur degree; Go OBC and teach on campus as an instructor. Stay there until the active Army expands its personnel. Right now...big draw down which means the war will be within the ranks, and I would not wish my worst enemy on the inside of that mess.

I agree. I'm not sure how the Army is looking, but the Marine Corps has already started looking for more reasons to disqualify Marines for reenlistment. The increasing competition within the ranks will definitely make it more difficult to reenlist in the future. If you are eligible now, stay in, but be prepared for the day when the Army says your time is up (not to sound too negative). Good luck!

Some will get their walking papers sooner than others. This happened in the 80s and nineties after Gulf I and Somalia But now, this drawdown is way hella bigger than when I was in. There may be a rise in violence in this generation of the uniformed services becoming vets in a civilian world, somewhat like post WWI, which morphed into gangster behaviors. IMO
