As we all know, the military is in the midst of significant drawdown.

The Army (for instance), has increased the QMP parameters, implemented QSP, increased mandatory bar to reenlistment reasons and decreased promotions rates/opportunities.

Soldiers make mistakes...but, in your opinion, what mistake/offense should a service member NOT be able to come back from?

Example:  A DUI should not be a recoverable offense...once a servicemember is convicted of or pleads down a DUI, their career should be over!

Great question, but lets take it one step farther.  IF there were to be offenses deemed "unrecoverable" (and I agree for the most part with all that have been mentioned already), there would also have to be MANDATORY charges that go along with them in order to prevent any instances of double standards (or the perception of double standards) in this regard.  We've all seen it in the past, especially with DUI charges, where certain individuals are allowed to skate no mention of the offense in their service record.

Its a "prisoner of his time" kinda thing. During the night of the war, people got away with damn near murder, now just saying the wrong thing will get you booted out.

Drug realted offenses, Safety related offenses in a leadership position, Sharp violations (I would include false accusations), child abuse

probably be best to treat it as a case-by-case situation. If someone got hurt by something that was unavoidable, yeah, go ahead a punish but probably not worthy of getting kicked out of the army. drug offenses (especially first time) can be corrected with treatment at ASAP. however, sharp and child abuse should not be "recoverable." we know better. we are the standard when it comes to professionalism. abuse of any kind is no better than bullying in my eyes. those offenses would equal immediate termination in the civilian world. those offenses should never be protected in the military.

I can go case by case with the safety violations. An example of safety violations like a Jumpmaster/DZSO putting paratroopers out at 18kt wind (max is 13kts). I also will not budge on drug offenses (unless Soldier can prove that they were drugged) it is not as if the pill, joint or needle fell out of the sky. it was a conscious decision
