Iran displays supercavitating torpedo and semi-submersible

Iran displayed its Hoot high-speed rocket-torpedo for the first time during an exhibition by the naval wing of the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGN) on 3 October.

The imagery confirmed long-held suspicions that the Hoot is identical to the VA-111 Shkval supercavitating torpedo that was developed by the Soviet Union. It has the same eight jet nozzles at the rear and four stabilisation fins that pop out of the torpedo's body.

Launched from a standard 533 mm torpedo tube, the rocket-powered weapon creates an air pocket around itself, thereby reducing drag and enabling it to reach speeds of up to 200 kt (370 km/h).

. . .

The IRGC also displayed a semi-submersible torpedo boat called the Zolfaqar. Such vessels are not considered to be true submarines because they need to keep a snorkel above the water to feed oxygen to their engines. They are nevertheless still difficult to detect using radar when submerged.

. . .

The Fars News Agency reported that the Zolfaqar is 17 m long, 3.3 m wide, weighs 22 tonnes, has a top speed of 70 km/h (38 kt), and is armed with the 324 mm torpedoes.

This would be deadly to a submarine.

LCDR Jeffery Dixon - Commander; I rather suspect that the sonar operators would have absolutely no doubt that the torpedo was coming.

Mind you, there is always the possibility that the noise of the torpedo just might mask whatever noises the submarine was making thus making accurate detection of the submarine slightly more difficult.

As a qualified sonar officer who served on a SSBN. Not worried about detecting them ( they would probably the reciprocal of the incoming bearing). That is easy. Assumed they had a bearing to us or why shoot. They typically know the direction of their target before they shoot. It is simply moving too fast to evade. Go to port, Go to starboard, speed up go deep, there just would be too little reaction time. We proved with the MK48 US Torpedo that all you need is to match the bearing rate of the target and shoot.

Its the same old story of one of the big nations "assisting" with development or outright selling technology to some despot.
They get the weapons but not the complete technical know how and that's why for the most part the weapons are ineffective.
Some weapons are no brainers, sell them a bunch of rocket launchers, Carbine assault rifles, pistols, etc., and they can pretty much grab and go on their way. Aircraft, torpedoes, complex missiles need more training and other support systems to operate effectively.
Between the US, Russia and China we need to stop arming these nations and let them come to solutions on their own.

PO1 Glenn Boucher - PO; You make a good point.

Since 2001, the United States of America has been the global leader in international arms sales. In 2014, the US sold $10,194,000,000 worth of arms world wide, Russia sold $5,971,000,000 worth, and China sold $1,978,000,000 worth. How much of each country's sales consisted of either cut-rate sales or sales funded by "loans" and/or "aid" which ended up being forgiven I have no idea - but funding the sales through "loans" and/or "aid" is a marvelous way of pumping money into a country's domestic arms industry without (directly paying any) subsidies. [all amounts are in 2014 dollars]

COL Ted Mc, I honestly didn't do any research on this but it seems to me that whenever some despot needs to go to war within their own country the weapons are always US, Russian or Chinese made. And your figures sadly do not surprise me.
I know it may be a bit off subject but I seriously hope that India and Pakistan don't get too nervous because we know that Iran is going to have a Nuke in a few years just because they don't play nice and by the rules. 3 countries that despise each other and are being armed by the big 3, a disaster waiting to happen.

even bb gun can chip a carrier's paint. So we must nuke them now and solve this problem before they get out of hand! lol

A badly designed machine gun, still kills .. so don't under estimate your enemies.

COL Ted Mc - ... then ask me why the twin tower fallen? ... You forget to take account of theological reason. Understand your enemy, don't generalize ALL enemies.

Never underestimate what would the enemies willing to sacrifice to achieve their goal.

PO3 (Join to see) - PO; I don't discount the possibility that "theological" splinter groups MIGHT conduct an attack on another country using a nuclear device of some sort.

True, if that happened the number of casualties would be enormous (possibly even as much as 0.3% of the US population). BUT, the possibility that a "theological" splinter group would be able to amass a sufficient number of nuclear devices to actually do a statistically significant amount of harm to the United States of America is about as likely as having KrispyKreme come out with a line of "diabetic friendly" donuts.

The "theological" splinter groups may not care about what America's reaction would be to the explosion of a nuclear device (or any other WMD for that matter) in an attack on the United States of America but the odds that the government of Iran doesn't care are significantly lower (and made even lower by the fact that the lower levels of leadership do care).

PS - The key is "achieve their goals" and even the most rabid of the "theological" splinter groups are aware (at least theoretically) that they are not going to achieve their goals by REALLY getting the American people mad at them. (Admittedly, they have an incorrect idea of what it would take to get the American people mad at them.)

COL Ted Mc - You still discounted that Iran itself is Theological. Plus, you don't need multiple nuke to "kill" most of American. An EMP strike from 1 can wipe out 50% of American in 6 months through chaos and failure of water, electrical and food supply line. Especially if they hit us during winter, that will be even worse.

Also, you had assumed the theological "splinter" group will consider making us mad will not achieve their goal. (Did you notice I use goal, a single goal?) Maybe you should study their theological belief on end time ... that might change your mind on the goal they are trying to achieve.

PO3 (Join to see) - PO; Admittedly Iran is a Theocracy, but its government is hardly a "theological" splinter group.

And, while an EMP attack MIGHT have the consequences you describe the potential for one to occur is just about nil.
