Does anyone think it is wrong that schools are using Good Friday as a snow day makeup and MLK day was not? Before anyone makes this conversation a race discussion, I am married to a woman of color. I want to know people's thoughts on the change of focus in the values in our country. One man died for all man's sins and the other was a great civil rights leader. Thoughts?

Old Thread is Old! But I'll bite.

MLK Day is a Federal Holiday; Good Friday is not. It's that simple.

I think the original backbone-less poster said what he said because he was specifically picking MLK Day and not some other holiday, like Columbus Day, and knew it would turn into a race discussion anyway. There are plenty of those who still look at us black folk as something less than human and undeserving of equal treatment.

Plus, the hyper-religious want us all to live under their rules anyway. My next door neighbor is Muslim, and objected to me and the wife eating dinner out on our deck during Ramadan. I laughed at him. One of my sisters, when I was back home in Rhode Island, insisted I not order a steak off the menu because it was Friday during Lent (I'm *not* Catholic). I laughed at her.

Yes, I'm going to call that NCO backboneless, he posted on a controversial topic while keeping his identity hidden. That alone makes it so.

No one's talking about Presidents' Day (February) as an acceptable snow day makeup, and that's in February. I just threw Columbus Day out there because it's the only holiday I could think of at the time.

But why go straight to MLK Day and complain because a RELIGIOUS holiday isn't being observed by the secular school system, but MLK Day is????

And for your information, I am 47, and you have no idea what I have or have not been through. I don't need to justify to you or anyone else, but since we're taking that tactic, since you're white, you have no room to talk about what I may or may not have been through.

Bottom line, if the OP weren't trying to make it a racial issue, they'd have taken the time to look at *all* possible holidays, not just MLK Day....why not talk about shrinking the Spring Break that schools have? Why not talk about making up days at the end of the school year? They hid their identity because they knew exactly what they were doing, and knew they'd get apologists over it.

Racism isn't over just because we have a black president.

I guess that would depend on how religious you are. MLK day is an American holiday to commemorate a man in US history - whether you like him, or not. Good Friday is a religious holy day in remembrance of something that not everyone believes.

That's the difference

But we do not get off on Good Friday. At least I don't and I work for a Christian business.
